Regional Convergence and Catch-up in India between 1960 and 1992

چکیده
This paper examines the evidence for regional convergence or catch-up in levels and growth rates of per capita income among the 16 major states in India between 1960 and 1992. The results — estimated using OLS, the within-group LSDV estimator, Re-Weighted Least Squares, and Least Trimmed Squares — establish that unconditional convergence in growth rates does not obtain, but that there is clear and robust evidence of conditional convergence. This suggests that important differences between observed state incomes are likely to be caused by different steady-state incomes, to which convergence occurs. The cross-state income distribution is analyzed and the greater polarization between states in terms of levels of income is established using measures of dispersion and kernel density estimates. A tentative conclusion is that a small group of states are pulling away from the rest of the distribution, causing an incipient second peak. JEL Classification: O11, O40, O53

Investigating Agricultural Productivity Growth and Convergence in Iran and Eastern African Countries
The issue of convergence or divergence of productivity has important policy for regional poverty reduction and increasing standards of living. If productivity converges to a common level without intervention, there is little need for explicit policies in lagging regions to promote catch up. On the other hand, productivity has divergence trend, then explicit policies would be needed to prevent f...
متن کاملWhich Countries are Catching up? New Evidences Using Flexible Fourier Stationary Test
In this paper, we tested the catching-up hypothesis toward the USA using Becker et al. (2006) flexible Fourier KPSS stationary test over the period 1960-2009. The mentioned test could control for unknown number and form of structural breaks using a selected frequency component of a Fourier function. Our results show almost poor countries stay poor and almost rich countries stay rich. South Kore...

Indian peninsular region comprises several Archean cratonic blocks (Dharwar, Bastar, Singhbhum, Aravalli – Bundelkhand), bordered by Proterozoic mobile belts. Therefore, this region is considered as tectonically stable and designated as the least vulnerable region to earthquake hazard except the still active Central Indian Tectonic Zone (CITZ). The latter is a major suture between southern and ...
متن کاملSeroprevalence of leptospirosis among suspected cattle in eastern part of India: a comparative study between rLipL32ELISA and MAT
Leptospirosis in cattle is a worldwide problem associated with abortion, agalactia, still birth and infertility resulting in major economic losses to dairy industry. There is lack of data regarding seroprevalence of bovine leptospirosis in eastern India. So, with the aim to investigate the prevalence of the disease in Odisha and West Bengal state of eastern India, a total of 350 cattle serum sa...
متن کاملWhich OIC countries are catching up? Time Series Evidences with Multiple Structural Breaks
Abstract In this paper, income per capita convergence hypothesis is tested in selected OIC countries. For this purpose, we use the time series model and univariate KPSS stationary test with multiple structural breaks (Carrion-i-Silvestre et al. (2005)) over the period 1950-2008. The results show that most OIC countries could not catch up toward USA. Although because of some positive term of tra...
